Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.
As for accommodation, Booking.com has a wealth of hotels near Naples Airport, old town B&Bs, city centre apartments and more to help you make the most of your stay.
We had a great trip and for us 3 days was just right.
We had a great trip and for us 3 days was just right. We visited Pompeii, hiked Vesuvius, caught a ferry for lunch in Provida, and the Metro to the football stadium. There is loads more to do if you stay longer. The city was not expensive to eat out, food of course exceptional and people really friendly. It felt like old Italy more than other places we've been. Less English spoken, more authentic, very busy during the day (insane traffic), not so much at night. We walked mainly, the Metro is also cheap and easy to use.

Naples is kind of unique.
Naples is kind of unique. Its kind of a bit mad, kind of a bit run down, but it has this infectious, exuberant vibe. The Neapolitans themselves are just fantastic - genuinely friendly and kind. They are SO proud of their city. Naples claims to have the best coffee in Italy, and its probably true. It's also the pizza capital of Italy - the birthplace of the margarita pizza - but also has great for pasta and seafood. After dark in Naples is party time, and it seems that every night is party night!
The traffic is total madness, and people on scooters appear out of nowhere, even in pedestrian areas. But other than that, we felt very safe in the city.
This is a great place to stay if you want to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. Both are just a short train ride away, which can get you there long before the crowds. The public transport, its good, cheap and safe.
Herculaneum - Pompeii's less well-known cousin - was a highlight for us. We visited in late May, at around 11am, and there were no crowds, just a few parties of enthusiastic history lovers and some school groups.

We were really surprised how dirty the streets were.
We were really surprised how dirty the streets were. Rubbish lined every street . Graffiti everywhere, smokers everywhere. Some lovely buildings but spoilt by the mess. Train ticket attendants were not friendly and were unhelpful. We felt they really disliked having to speak English at Napoli Central. The ones at University linear line were much better. Restaurants were good . Good base to tour Mt Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The Historic district is old, and not everything is in great...
The Historic district is old, and not everything is in great repair, but there are wonderful small cafés and trattoria's that you can find, and if you are interested in history and in visual art there is a lot to find in Naples. We were somewhat disappointed by the murals in the Spanish Quarter (most seemed only slightly more than spontaneous graffiti), but the strong sense of community spirit and the sincerely welcoming attitude of everyone we met there made up for it!
Absolutely make the trek to the waterfront (Santa Lucia and Chiaia) for a delicious seafood dinner at least once!
If you find a good hotel (after a not-so-good experience at a different establishment we very happily settled into the Palazzo Caracciolo, which was wonderful!), Naples has a lot to offer and it is close enough for day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast!

Santa Lucia is the perfect location if you enjoy culture,...
Santa Lucia is the perfect location if you enjoy culture, sea air and food. There were at least a dozen restaurants on our block. We were 50 metres from the sea and a ten minute walk to Spagnoli shops and restaurants. Bring sturdy walking shoes and sunblock to walk to your hearts content. The elevator to the ‘castel’ walk was right across the street. Enjoy!
This hotel was the grandest hotel I have ever stayed in. You can't really call it a hotel if it's a palace. It was the perfect ending to our 3.5 week trip in Italy. We had seen so many museums and palaces and then we stayed in one . Pictures and words cannot describe how Grand this Hotel was . Only a few rooms in this hotel it was something special. I am totally lost for words. It was like staying in a museum. The room was enormous. The ceilings are WOW !! If you ever stay in Naples this is a once in a lifetime place to stay.
The room was easy enough to find, look for a small blue sign on the gate post outside where they will meet you on arrival. A short walk to lots of great restaurants and bars, along with amazing shopping.
The breakfast in Italy consists of croissant and coffee - so don’t be expecting anything savoury. This hotel uses a local bar 200 meters away which you take a token to for complimentary coffee and croissant. Tip - just sit down outside they will serve you - show them the voucher when you arrive.
nice attention from the front desk, helpful with information regards excursions and also let me leave my luggage even before check in time since I had an excursion earlier. Also great attention from the 2 employees at the breakfast, very nice and polite. I also appreciate the services that you can find at a hotel, as Italy is full of B&B and RBNBs i prefer the professional attention and amenities that you can find at a hotel ( as safety box, early or late check in, luggage storage, etc )
Excellent accommodation with friendly, helpful staff. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable.
Location is great with easy access to Napoli centrale station and metro. Plenty of food options nearby.
We read plenty of previous reviews about the bad neighbourhood but this was just a typical Naples area (maybe guests had only experienced other parts of Italy previously) - the accommodation is secure in a private building on a main street which is well lit and plenty of people around.
I loved my stay at Napoli Cityscape! Vanna and Antonio were some of the nicest people we met in all of Italy and they were so great at communicating and making sure we were comfortable. I love that we got breakfast vouchers for every morning at a nearby cafe - I think I even preferred that to a hotel-served breakfast! The room was spacious and stylish, the amenities were great, and the mini-fridge was perfect for storing all our takeaway pizza.
The host is attentive and responsive.
The location is perfect for walking thru Naples' busy narrow streets. To get to the hotel you pass thru an old courtyard and ride an "historic" elevator, and then enter a very modern hotel unit. The contrast is delightful.
The hotel has a terrace off the breakfast room, and the staff serves you at the tables.
We traveled thru italy for 3 weeks, and this was the biggest and most pleasant surprise.
Nice apartment with a clean room and kitchen that you can dine there. The balcony is cute, very Italy style.
Walking distance to the Trainstation and public transportation.
The area near the train station would be a little bit messy, just like everywhere in the world, I guess.
But in Naples, it would be nice if you stay in somewhere you can walk to the place you want, taking a bus or car would cost you more time...
The property is brand new, very well appointed, and in a great part of Naples, close to the seashore, the Metro, and good restaurants. Our hosts were very kind and accommodating, helping us park our car( oh Italy!) and giving us suggestions for restaurants and how to make our way around Naples. Communication was quick. Would stay here again if coming to Naples, a city we thoroughly enjoyed.
It felt like a home from home, with lots of character, lots of art, beautiful views of Naples and all the facilities you could need! The host was incredibly helpful and gave us plenty of info before our stay, she got us breakfast last minute, arranged transport to the port and even continued to help with recommendations over WhatsApp for the rest of our time in Italy - thank you so much <3
Extra spacious, Foro Carolino was the highlight of all our hotels on this trip to Italy! The place was also clean and had amenities you will need. Staff were extremely helpful and attentive. 4 stations by metro (2-min walk) to Napoli Centrale, we liked that it was away from the bustle but still near enough. Special mention to morning breakfast that is freshly prepared at the b&b, amazing!
Hotel looks awful from the outside, but lobby and public areas surprisingly nice. Great parking in parking garage connected to hotel. Elevator, which is great - you never know if there will be one in Italy! Front desk attendant very pleasant and spoke English well. Breakfast typical. It wasnt too far from the airport, and we got in quite late so suited our needs.
Very nice room located in the center of the city, large and very clean room,
Danilo was there for us 24/7 and made sure that all is perfect, including where to go etc and also for our next destination.
It is of paramount importance that the host speaks fluently English especially in Italy.
It is exactly the kind of room you need n Naples.
We spent our first night in Italy at Toledo 16. They were so helpful getting us from the airport and into the hotel with self check in since we arrived early. A perfect spot to relax and reset after a long day of travel. Great central location to sights, airport, and train station.
An absolutely amazing place to stay while visiting naples. Enrico is the best guy I’ve ever met in italy. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, showed us the places we should visit while visiting the city. Thanks again for everything, we had a great time in napoli :)
It is beautiful, it has views, it is luxurious. Gisella, GianLuca, Gabriele, Angela and Loredana looked after us brilliantly. the breakfast was a feast. it is the best place we have stayed in Naples, and probably (for me….my man is Italian) the best in Italy.
Everything from the owner to the apartment awsome i give 100% to.anyone Who través to naples italy im from miami fl so anyone from the unired states you should not thinl twice about it best in naples
We realy enjoyed our stay. Location is amazing! Perfect place to walk around and enjoy Naples streets to feel true Italy. Room was nice and tidy. Also cleaned every day.
