Sitting in the open-air bath and watching the rain-soaked mountain and valley was rest and relaxation I imagined. Lots of money being invested in new tall buildings in the centre of the business district that don't quite jive with the otherwise laid-back (if you'll pardon the expression) atmosphere of the town. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition.
