FAQs about hotels in Lago Maggiore - Italy
A Breath of Fresh Air
Italy’s longest lake, Lake Maggiore lies at the foot of the southern Alps and extends into Switzerland in the north. Most of the Lake Maggiore hotels in Switzerland are in Locarno and neighbouring Ascona. Surrounded by vineyards, Locarno houses a 12th-century castle and an innovative representation of the solar system which extends as far as Tegna village.
Also in Swiss territory is Brissago, starting point for boat trips to the Brissago Islands whose botanical gardens grow coffee plants. Over the Italian border is beautiful Cannobio in Piedmont, where brightly coloured buildings overlook the small harbour.
South is Ghiffa, home to a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage mountain. Just beyond is Verbania, a laidback city lining 2 of Maggiore Lake’s shores. Across the water, the largest of the Borromean Islands – Isola Bella – has a palace and stepped gardens offering wonderful lake views. Home to the largest concentration of Lake Maggiore hotels, Stresa is a lovely town and departure point for boat trips to these islands.
Near the lake’s southern tip is Arona, while less well-known Lake Maggiore resorts in Lombardy include Angera (known for wines and a medieval castle), sleepy Ranco, and Luino with its popular weekly market.
Booking.com has a fabulous range of apartments, B&Bs and hotels by Lake Maggiore covering all these resorts and more.

- From US$199.89 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 473 reviewsThe hotel is up on a hill with a gorgeous view of the lake. Our room had a spectacular view — truly one of the highlights of our stay. There are benches all around the yard where you can relax and enjoy the view, and the sunsets were amazing. One evening, we even saw deer walking through the garden — such a nice surprise. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent (worth booking ahead if you're staying over the weekend). The town is only a 20-minute walk away, so it was easy to go explore without taking the car. Everything felt calm and welcoming. We had a great stay and are already looking forward to coming back.Guest review byStefanBulgaria

There is a wonderful art deco inspired elegance to the hotel, exemplified by the staff who complement the aesthetic with their manner and professionalism. It could be a model for the best boutique hotels to follow. The breakfast is superb by any standard, world class quality and a wonderful selection of food. The location is on the road next to Lake Maggiore (which is very convenient) and the staff will guide you with regard to parking optionsGuest review byJamesUnited Arab Emirates
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 435 reviewsBeautiful grounds, fantastic staff, and 5 star food worthy of any top class restaurant. Special mention to Andrea, he was very friendly and accommodating. We can't wait to return and use all the extra facilities we didn't have time to use on our short visit (pool, steam room etc). The room was in keeping with the rustic nature of the grounds and hotel and even though we didn't request a lake view we enjoyed lovely scenery overlooking the lake.Guest review bySimonUnited Kingdom

Stresa has some lovely spots, fantastic old hotels, lovely promenade, lots of places to eat. Quite a lot of construction work going on and some additional work needed, I hope they restore all of the old villas as it is sad to see them looking derelict. Fantastic day trips on the ferry, Isola Bella Palace, Mombello bucket lift and Villa Taranto gardens, all really lovely days out. Don't know why all tourist info/maps show the Mottarone Cable car, this has been closed since the tragic accident about 7 years ago and it is misleading. You need to get a paper ferry timetable to work out your day trips, much easier.Guest review bySukie WUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. Well worth a visit.Guest review byLenoraUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Baveno is a town of human scale.
Baveno is a town of human scale. It's position on the lake in the Borromean gulf means the it is very well connected with ferries. At the time I visited (September) Ferries run around the sights of the lake centre every half hour, and twice a week they run up to Locarno and Ascona in Switzerland (well worth a look. The lake navigation company don't advertise it but they do a week holiday pass which is good for unlimited journeys over the entire length of the lake for 95 Euro per week. If you are going to be getting around by ferry predominantly, this is outstanding value. For comparison, on Lake lucerne and Lake Geneva, the ferry company charge 90 Euros per day for an open pass. Baveno doesn't overplay the tourist card in terms or pricing. An espresso can be had for 1.30 Euro, a Cappucino for 2.50 Euro. The town is well served by Uber (who are more reliable than the local taxi firms I dealt with, and considerably lower cost). Don't miss the Borromeo islands (and Villas) or the botanical garden at Villa Taranto. If you have a head for heights try the bucket lift (Funivia) at Laveno for some great views over the lake. Look out also for Sunday Lunchtime music (chamber music or soft jazz generally) in towns around the lake and modern art exhibitions at Villa Giulia in Pallanza. An exhibition of work by Ugo Nespolo was incredibly good, and the ticket also gives access to Museo Paesaggio with some interesting bronzes and landscapes On the northern shores of the lake, Cannobio is a lovely little town, well worth a visit. and Cannero is a (better?) alternative to Luino on Market days. On the Swiss lakeshore, personally I prefer Ascona to Locarno, principally because of size and a more Italian vibe but both are worth visiting.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I have been going to Cannobio for nearly thirty years it is a little gem on Lago Maggiore and is the essence if an Italian town. There are not many English or UK tourists, which makes it good to practise Italian. It sits on the lake with an amazing Sunday market and emits a feeling of comfort and home for me I should say its horrible to keep it a little secret but it is a great place to visit with amazing restaurants and good quality food with prices for all budgets and campsites tooGuest review byLouiseUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Lovely place!
Lovely place! Lots to see, mooching about, & plenty of places to sit & relax. Boat trips on Lago Maggiore from the centre of the lakeside, not marked on Google Maps - easy to go to the wrong place & then nearly miss the boat. Book online or turn up to the office - a bit more expensive on board. Isola Bella has the most interesting palace. Rocca Borromea is a good climb & interesting historically, & very scenic views from there. We didn't go on the Wheel, but if we'd had time we would have. Nice aspects everywhere. Good to walk around, slowly re. cobbles (not easy with a wheeled suitcase - recommend a rucksack walking to ones hotel or apartment, or be careful walking along the road). The main shopping street is narrow & pedestrianised. Good food everywhere - nicest at the northeastern part of town, & the pizza crust at Polda is sublime. Several icecream places near the lake front shops (cross over the road as they're not actually beside the lake), vary in cost, but generally 2 scoops cost the same as 1. Vast array of flavours; we recommend the mango, melon, strawberry, & vegan chocolate sorbets, particularly the places that put choc chips in it. Prices for shopping is a bit higher than expected, but this is a holiday destination. Some of the men are really rather unnecessarily grumpy - maybe they're bored with their jobs in the restaurants & on the boats, who knows? It is September so nearing the end of high season.Guest review byRosamundUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Cannero Riviera is a quiet spot on the shores of Lake...
Cannero Riviera is a quiet spot on the shores of Lake Maggiore in a perfect position for sightseeing trips around the lake , including into Switzerland, both by car and by boat. It is served by a very picturesque foot passenger ferry terminal. For such a small place there are plenty of eating options including restaurants, pizza places and gelateria but limited options for shopping. However that need not be a problem as there are great weekly markets at Connobio and Luino both of which can be reached from Cannero by ferry. Can thoroughly recommend a trip to Ascona in Switzerland and the Borromean islands just off Stresa as places to visitGuest review byCarolineUnited Kingdom - 6.0

A small place by the lake, but the shore is more or less private, so you are limited to the part of the shore that is in the camp, The place has many shops, which are more or less empty or already run down, also there is only one restaurant , which is open all day, but there is a lot of traffic. Also, there is a lot of garbage on the street. In general, you get the feeling that they had big plans for tourism, but they did not succeed.Guest review byBoštjanSlovenia - 8.0

Luino is quite a large town with lots of options for entertainment in the evenings, as well as access to the lake and its amenities. It is not overpopulated with tourists (we went in September) and still retains its own identity.Guest review byPeterUnited Kingdom - 6.0
Lesa is one of the smaller towns dotted around the lake.
Lesa is one of the smaller towns dotted around the lake. It has a few restaurants and bars but nothing noisy. If you are thinking of using the boats and ferries to get out and about you will have to go up to Stressa or down to Arona as there is only 1 boat a day that stops at Lesa. Small lakeside promenade that is a pleasant stroll or to stop for a drink . I would recommend hiring a car as public transport is a bit hit and miss. About 20 minute drive to Arona, 10-15 mins to Stressa.Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - 10.0

It’s nice, a bit touristy but nice. Great for Isola Bella of course. Love the ferry service from Stresa. The hub of Lake Maggiore. Had a really good time in Stresa, Canobio and in the north of the lake, Locarno and Ascona in Switzerland.Guest review byDominicUnited Kingdom
