We were first in Hallstatt twenty years ago and it was magical. When we returned, granted in August, it had been "discovered". Park outside and bus in. But the bus traveled at 5 mph in an effort to push through the hordes of tourists. We most enjoyed a very early breakfast, sitting on a terrace by the lake, where we were virtually the only people awake and up. We travelled with 3 different trains from Vienna to Obertraun in order to visit Hallstat. Unfortunately, the transportation wasn't very convenient for us. One of the trains that we had arranged was late and we had to wait two more hours in order to get the last train to Obertraun. We departed from Vienna at 8:00 and we arrived to Obertraun at 15:30! Obertraun was very close to Hallstat. Hallstat is a magical place but next time I would prefer to visit it by car.Guest review bySophia - 10.0

Hallstatt is renowned for its incredible location on a tiny strip of land between the steep mountainside and the lake. It would be fabulous, except for the huge numbers of tour buses that arrive every day, swamping the tiny village with more tourists than it can accommodate. Several of the restaurants are not open for dinner, so there is little choice, however the Grüner Baum has a wonderful terrace and the food is good. Stay in beautiful Obertraun instead of the overpriced and crowded Hallstatt! We stayed 3 nights in a lovely accommodation Haus Edelweiss, and following the recommendations of lovely host Nina, we spent one day walking from Obertruan to Hallstatt. Along the way, we saw this stone path going up the hill and we went up (very do-able hike), and it led to a very beautiful view of Hallstatt! We then went down the other way and continued walking towards Hallstatt, explored the beautiful village and took the ferry (Euro 12/pax) back to Obertruan. Next day, we walked a loop from Obertruan to Koppenwinlsee. The walk was very lovely and we saw tiny red strawberries everywhere! There was a restaurant after Koppenwinslee but I think it was closed on Mon-Wed (please check), and other days open for lunch & dinner, so time yourself to make it in time for lunch/dinner. We were stopping so often to admire the scenery that we missed their lunch time! It is better to visit during non-summer to enjoy Austria.Guest review byRaySingapore - 8.0

The accommodation had great view and the balcony was so Cousy, I could sit whole evening there to spend some quality time. The location is beautiful and relaxing. My kids enjoyed lot. Gosau had everything we needed for a wonderful, relaxing holiday - a grocery store, multiple restaurants, beautiful views, friendly people, and many trails for hiking, biking, and walking.
