We took time to walk through Ft Davis to shop for books, hats, purses, nuts, ice cream, great Mexican lunches, and then capture beautiful sunrise photos, appreciate a Dark Sky town showing off a star filled sky, constellations, the Milky Way, and just before sunrise the crescent moon, Venus and Saturn align to resemble a Smiley Face.
An enjoyable, relaxing vacation!

The area is beautiful if you enjoy remote locations.
The area is beautiful if you enjoy remote locations. Everyone is very friendly and we had a great time. We visited the McDonald Observatory and it took my breath away! That is a Must Do if you visit. We also went to the historic Ft Davis and found this very interesting. This is an area you should visit if you want to escape the city and enjoy nature.

We enjoyed the old military Fort Davis.
We enjoyed the old military Fort Davis. So different from what they show in movies. We also took the tour of McDonald Observatory which is very worthwhile. Also visited Alpine and Marfa, and even Langtry which is really in the middle of nowhere.

We didn't do any site seeing in Fort Davis, because we spent all our free time at the McDonald Observatory. But, we could see that the town was clean and had several dining options and many hotels/inns to choose from. The historic Ft Davis is an attraction that we went to many years ago, but we didn't visit it this time.
There is a modern and well stocked grocery store in this town.

The scenery was beautiful, in the general location as well as further afield. Eating places locally limited but we were out of season - good supermarket nearby. The Historical Fort was wonderful, well worth a visit, and the McDonalds Observatory and scenic drive were highlights of our whole trip.

Small town in beautiful Davis Mountains.
Small town in beautiful Davis Mountains. Unique area of West Texas. Don’t miss Hwy 118 (any direction) for Scenic drives. Don’t miss Balmorhea Springs State Park just up the road. Snake & Reptile museum very interesting.
Don’t miss Big Bend Ranch State Park!!! Beautiful drive, up close views of the Rio Grande and Mountains. Enter from Terlinqua, Tx (south of Alpine) or Presidio, Tx (south of Maria)
Try Marfa Burritos for breakfast or lunch.

Fantastic! You see right from the outside that the hotel is beautifully renovated and maintained historic building. Our room fitted the atmosphere, clean, comfy with a historic touch. Our girls felt like princesses, that’s what they told me ;) There was even a room with a fireplace on the ground floor where guests gathered to chat.
For sure best base for visiting star nights at McDonald Observatory.

Cute historic hotel right in the middle of town. Very large rooms that are furnished with antiques. The restaurant and coffee shop attached are both good as well. The hotel is definitely haunted so just keep that in mind!
