FAQs about hotels in Alghero

Sardinia’s Catalan Gem

The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.

The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.

South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.

Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

The Alghero accommodation on Booking.com includes 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

A quiet town with wonderful people and old buildings full of history. Many terraces/restaurants with a variety of menus and affordable prices. Being a small town you can walk around without needing any means of transport. If you want to leave Alghero, you need a car because public transport is poor.

We visited Alghero in the second part of August which is a top season for Italians vacationing. The town was packed but not overcrowded. You could easily find a spot at the beach, which is long and sandy. The rental of the sunbeds with umbrella was in average 30 E for two sunbeds. The town is very close to the airport - about 5 miles and a short taxi ride. We loved combining glimpse into the history in the old town and enjoying beautiful beach during the day. In the evening hours the restaurants were full (Italians eat very very late 10-11) so plan to make a reservation ahead of time if you don't want long wait. We also visited the most beautiful beach La Pelosa which is about an hour north from Alghero and the town of Sassari, another old town in the inland. Overall we are planning to return, as we had a great time in Alghero.

The old town is great and if possible stay within the old town. There are many excursions from the port. There is better value to be found in some of the smaller restaurants and bars away from the main square.

Alghero old town was lovely but busy in the evening.

Alghero old town was lovely but busy in the evening. Would recommend making reservations if you wish to eat at a particular restaurant. Alghero beach was ok there are some fantastic beaches not too far away so a hire car is a must to explore further afield. Parking in Alghero can be a problem, there is limited free on street parking. There is a free car park close to the Lidl supermarket, and also at the port.

Alghero is a truly wonderful town, perfectly located near magnificent beaches with crystal-clear waters. The historic city center is absolutely charming, full of beautiful shops, cozy cafés, and lively streets to explore. It’s the ideal mix of relaxation by the sea and vibrant city life — a place we would love to return to again and again.

First of all, Vanna is a wonderful host. She exceeded any expectations from us with a beautiful smile and a warm welcome at her place. She gave us great suggestions for local attractions, traditional Sardinian food and cultural festivities in Alghero. The room is impeccable and very central to any main landmark in town. In addition, she also has an exquisite attention to detail. This made our stay particularly enjoyable. We will have a great memory of this city also thanks to Vanna. Grazie amici!

Truly lovely place with super kind team reading wishes from your eyes. We enjoyed our 11 nights stay with chilling, tennis, horse riding and a wonderful sailing tour (thank you so much for a wonderful day and so many insights Antonio). The location is perfect for daytrips to wonderful beaches and also near to Alghero old town. Perfect stay - hope we can come back again. All the best to the hotel family and team 🥰

Nothing - the worst stay in 10 years of constant international travel, and this is the first negative review that I have ever left on Booking.com, despite hundreds and hundreds of stays. Hotel Villa Piras has destroyed my impression of the beautiful city of Alghero, forever!
