Perfect quiet little town with still plenty to see and do.

Perfect quiet little town with still plenty to see and do. The tour of the workhouse was exceptional and plenty of places for walks. SuperValu is less then a five minute walk and cater for everything. Locals are friendly

The Workhouse was interesting to see but we did not tour.

The Workhouse was interesting to see but we did not tour. The Castle was not visible from a close drive-by - one had to proceed down a drive to see. Enjoyed seeing all the cruisers docked along the Shannon. Restaurants sparse, but found a very fine pub to watch a football match. Precious little activity in town while we were there. It was a well-situated stop-off between The Burren and our next stop in the Boyne Valley.

Lovely town & the people were so friendly.

Lovely town & the people were so friendly. There could have been a bit more tourist shops to buy some gifts to take back, if you don't have a car to get into Galway city or other towns to buy these things it was a little lacking in that area.

There is an excellent Indian and Italian carry out restaurant in the centre of the town. There is also an Aldi in the town. Also Portumna is close to beautiful countryside and forest parks. We were visiting Flowerhill Equestrian Centre. For horse lovers this is an excellent facility, with a fabulous cross country course. We also visited Ballinasloe which is another lovely town, about 30 km away.

First and foremost, owners Dick and Liz are what makes this place great. They were helpful with any queries we had, but more importantly, they were constantly engaging with us and other guests in non-intrusive way to make you feel welcome. On top of the owners, the location and facilities are great. While you are located in the centre of Portumna town, when you go through the gate you feel as you've entered a remote forest where you can completely detach from the external world enjoy your holidays.

Very responsive and accommodating host, which is really appreciated. Comfortable lodge in quiet, relaxing location. We enjoyed watching deer from the well equipped kitchen. Friendly neighbours next door and opposite who were very welcoming. Five spacious bedrooms with 3 bathrooms (plenty hot water for 7 of us) - perfect for our needs. Walking distance to Portumna, it's Churches, Playground, Library and Castle. Aldi and Supervalu close by for supplies. Would recommend.

We have a family farm in Portumna so have stayed at the apartments, cabins and hotel since they were built. Apartment 8 was exceptionally clean, bed linen was good, the video showing how to open the key box a great help and the apartment heated up quickly once we turned the heating on. Julia was exceptionally helpful and pleasant to deal with.
