FAQs about hotels in Kilkenny

Craic Larger than Medieval Life

Spirited Kilkenny was Ireland’s capital in the Middle Ages and although many monuments remain from back then, it’s now best known for the 'craic'. Kilkenny cream ale flows in pubs forming part of its legendary nightlife and tours of Smithwick’s showcase Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, on grounds containing the St Francis Abbey ruins.

Kilkenny has the most medieval churches in Ireland. Dating to the 13th-century are the Black Abbey and St Canice’s Cathedral, next to the Round Tower - the only remains of a 9th-century monastery founded by the saint.

Medieval streets, inns and wall remnants still stand, but the most impressive attraction is Kilkenny Castle, in large gardens by the River Nore. The 3-turreted fortress was a former home of the once powerful Butler family.

The Parade leads from here past high street shops to The Tholsel – the porticoed town hall. The Elizabethan merchants’ residence Rothe House is in a similar style. Wandering the colourful streets you can’t fail to notice buildings named after cats, a reference to the residents’ dogged determination. Local hurling team The Cats play at Nowlan Park, and the city hosts the annual Cat Laughs comedy festival, amongst others.

Booking.com’s Kilkenny accommodation includes hotels with spas and pools, and city centre guest houses near the train station.

Only had time to visit Kilkenny Castle & Gardens, St.

Only had time to visit Kilkenny Castle & Gardens, St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral, the Black Abbey and St. Canice 13th century Cathedral (church of Ireland) and tower. Climbed the tower's 121 steps (multiple ladder type steps) .to the top (nice views of the whole area). Didn't get a chance to visit St. Mary's medieval mile museum or the 12th-century Cistercian Jerpoint Abbey about 20 minutes from Kilkenny.

We didn’t expect to love Kilkenny this much.

We didn’t expect to love Kilkenny this much. Honestly, we thought it might just be a quick stop between Dublin and Dingle — but wow, this city had other plans. We stayed at the Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel, which turned out to be right in the heart of everything (and dangerously close to several very good pubs). The staff were friendly, the room was great, and the downstairs bar made it a little too easy to “just pop in for one.” The castle is straight out of a storybook, St. Canice’s Cathedral has a tower climb that will either make you feel brave or slightly ridiculous (worth it either way), and Rothe House and the Medieval Mile Museum make history feel alive and oddly relatable. Everywhere we turned there was something beautiful, old, or both. And the pubs — good grief. Every night turned into “just one more pint,” with live music, friendly locals, and that cozy Irish magic that makes you forget what time it is. Kilkenny has this perfect mix of history, charm, and fun. It’s walkable, welcoming, and just the right size to feel like you really got to know it. We left wishing we’d stayed longer — and promising we’ll be back (ideally with stronger pub stamina).

Kilkenny is a medieval city and you can feel that every place you go! Such a magical, authentic Irish feel to the city - everything we wanted to see and more. It quickly became my favorite place on earth I've visited so far!

Kilkenny is a lovely small city right on a river.

Kilkenny is a lovely small city right on a river. We recommend taking advantage of a good walking tour. We did, and it was a perfect way to spend two hours on a sunny morning. Our guide was superb, filling us in on the history of the city with interesting and humorous stories. The castle is an excellent representation of “castles” in general, and we recommend taking the time to tour the castle. There is a very nice cafeteria/restaurant in the old Royal Stable right across from the front entrance to the castle; the food was good and the setting is wonderful.

Smithwick’s experience was great..

Smithwick’s experience was great.. Very easy to find parking for our rental car. Sullivan’s experience was equally interesting - great food. Visit of the medieval town along with his numerous shops was quite something… Overall the friendliness of the Irish people was memorable. Great review for sure.

Spacious & spotlessly clean room & shower. Absolutely loved the breakfast in a basket. Just a 10 minute walk to the city centre but we took the canal & path route up to the castle. Catherine & Liam were friendly and knowledgeable. We were wishing we had booked for more than 1 night as Kilkenny is so beautiful.
