FAQs about hotels in Hvar

Echoes of the Age of Empires

Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.

Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.

Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.

At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation.

This was the perfect Adriatic vacation. Best mix of historical sites, sea-side exursions, excellent restaurants, and time to relax as well. Be prepared to walk a lot and have proper footware for walking on the rocky beaches.

    I loved Hvar.

I loved Hvar. Scenery beautiful, great restaurants in the town at the back of the main square, very pretty settings some are expensive to other European travels I've been on. Our favourite restaurants were Black Pepper, Fig, Junior. Would not choose to visit July/August main town can be very busy. Sun beds along the coast can be expensive to hire. Saying this I travelled as a couple In September and we loved Hvar.

Love, love, love Hvar, however, it is tough going if you are not fabulously fit. I am in my mid 60s and swim 3km a week and walk about 5kms a day. My husband has a prosthetic leg. I found the steps challenging, they were almost impossible for my husband. Hindsight.... stay in Split and use the ferry to do a day trip - leave on the early ferry and stay until the last daily ferry. Hvar is seasonal a few restaurants in the back blocks are starting to close for the year. By the end of October we are told 1 restaurant remains open until April. Oh... I should mention is it not a cheap getaway.

Lovely atmosphere and very settled weather. A variety of excursions and walks Swimming is nice but if you like sandy beaches then you need to wear waterproof shoes because the beach is stoney. Food is international but you can find Croatian dishes too.

Hvar is beautiful and has enough to be relaxing, or to have fun and excursions if you want them. The recent sound curfew means it is a great place for those not so keen on being kept up by those partying, but there is a lively atmosphere in Hvar Town. The beaches are all pebbly and public, so open to all. Beach shoes are a must, but there are ample sun loungers to rent and the water is crystal clear. There are loads of restaurants and cafes, and no hassling by them trying to get you in, which was refreshing. There is lots to do, the fort is worth the walk, and there are numerous boat trips to the other beautiful islands, there are water sports and an inflatable aqua park too.

Hvar centre is over priced and if you do not get recommendations where to eat you could end up paying a lot of money for poor quality meals. The island itself is beautiful and worth exploring on your on own. Jelsa would be a much better based than Hvar old town, where a glass of wine is half the price!

Absolutely brilliant! Georgia is the best host in the world, she made us feel so welcomed that we wished to stay more in Hvar just because of her. Now we are seriously considering coming back to explore more of the island and surrounding islands. The apartment is spacious and has everything you can imagine, from band aids and amenities in the bathroom to blender and coffee machine in the kitchen. Better than a hotel, for sure! Don't research, book with her...you won't regret.

This is the perfect place to stay in Hvar. The family who run the hotel are so kind and helpful and do drop offs to and from the town and to the beach which is so helpful and makes it better than staying in town as the beach is not easy to access without a car. The pool is lovely and the surrounding is comfortable and relaxing. The rooms are spacious and clean with great AC. Cant recommend this place enough

The location couldn’t have been better. The apartment had everything we needed. It was spotless and comfortable. Lovely place. Toni was there to meet us and explained everything we needed to know. He also gave us breakfast vouchers for a local hotel which was the icing on the cake as it was fab. I’ll definitely book this apartment again if visiting Hvar.

Very nice and clean apartment hotel, with nice location. The hostess is also very service minded and accommodated to our wishes. It’s a quiet location, near the beach and within walking distance from Hvar Town (note: on top of the hill, so maybe take a cab to the hotel on arrival) and two grocery stores.

Well managed hotel that works with hearts from set up, room amenities, breakfast and services. Excellent location in a quiet place facing a beach with crystal clear water and nice restaurants in hotel or few steps away. Going to Hvar town is just 8 mins away by driving.
