This village Perama is located close to the highway between Chania and Heraklion and offers a good starting point to discover the north side of Crete. Lots of beaches, nature, caves, monestries as well cultural ellements to discover. You need a car though but that is true for whole Crete. Less comfortable to discover the south of Crete as you have to go around the mountain and that takes time. Perama has a couple of good supermarkets and some smaller restaurants. Good pizeria/gyros place at the entrance crossing next to the supermarket. I would recommend to drive a little further to the coast for nicer restaurants with sea view.
