BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go...
BOWMORE is a good town to make it your base "camp" to go around to visit the distilleries. It meets your basic needs for restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy, post office and a place to get gas. The people were friendly and helpful. For us during our time period for the visit, there was a big street repaving project going on which made the streets very rough to drive on - I believe that this improvement should be finished now. We enjoyed our visit here. The one piece of advice that I would make - is to make reservations for dinner at any place you want to eat at.Guest review byPatriciaCanada - 10.0

Bowmore is a small but very pretty town/ village right on...
Bowmore is a small but very pretty town/ village right on the loch shore - originating as a "planned village" from the late 1700s (go to the Islay museum in Port Charlotte to find out more). It has a whisky distillery of course which sadly was not running tours when we visited, due to covid. Bowmore seemed like the best place to stay on Islay as it was within an easy drive of all sights, distilleries and the ferry ports. There was also a reasonable array of shops, including a supermarket. We were lucky with fine weather throughout but could have done with a couple of extra days.Guest review byGeorgeUnited Kingdom
