A Slice of Stunning Switzerland

Set on slopes by Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a laidback and liveable city. The views of the lake and dramatic peaks of the Alps are simply stunning, especially from Sauvabelin Tower in the northern woods.

Surrounded by vineyards, this is an outdoor lifestyle city great for sports including sailing, cycling and hiking. In fact, many international sporting governing bodies and the International Olympic Committee are based here. There is also an excellent Olympic Museum. In winter, Lausanne skiing options include the Jura Mountains to the north-west, and the Valais canton south-west of the lake.

By the lake (Lac Léman in French) is the Ouchy port area, home to many of the Lausanne hotels and restaurants. To the north is the Flon district, known for its lively nightlife popular with students.

The cobbled Old Town – the Cité – is a Swiss Heritage Site on a hill at the city’s highest point. It houses the castle and Lausanne Museum, both watched over by the multi-spired Notre-Dame cathedral. At the foot of the hill are 3 squares with markets, one of which – Place Riponne – is on the Metro.

This is the world’s smallest city with a Metro, an indicator of the wonderfully efficient Swiss transport system, meaning that Geneva Airport (the closest to Lausanne) is easily reachable.

    Lausanne is a lovely city, energetic, lots of nightlife, and nice restaurants, and a great metro. We used our brief time to take a classic Belle Epoch boat across the lake to Yvoire, plus lots of wandering in town.

    Transport facilities are excellent. Beautiful scenery . Many places of interest and all cultures and ages catered for . Shopping in the town centre - beautiful back streets and main strips of shops . The views across the lake are spectacular. All types of food catered for too.

    We used Lausanne as our base to visit the Chillon Castle (highlight), Montreux and for our drive out to Gruyère and the Cailler chocolate factory. With the Lausanne tram/bus/train pass, it was easy to get around town—Lausanne has interesting architecture and we found a few good restaurants not hard to reach with the passes. Lots to do there, not an overwhelming size, real variety. Would visit again.— missed highlights but liked the feel of the city. We are 69 and 70.

    A great place to go for dinner is the Eat me. The food was amazing and the staff wonderful and knowledgeable. Lausanne is a beautiful city especially in summer. The lake is just gorgeous. The old town is very nice too.

    Beautiful views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

    Beautiful views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Interesting old town. Lovely peaceful walks along the side of the Lake. The old Centre of Geneva, the roads down to the Lake at Ouchy and the road around the lake are quiet without much traffic (unlike many other cities).

    The Metro train system works very well.

    The Metro train system works very well. I lived at Elite hotel and that was 4 train stops away from the University. Make sure to download the Metro App because it is very convenient to outline what train and/or bus you should use. Lausanne is built on a 3 hills (I was told by the tour guide) and prepare yourself for walking up hills. I highly recommend the tour of the old city. The views are spectacular. Dinner eating melted cheese was a good experience.

    The hotel is really conveniently located, in a nice neighbourhood next to the train station. You also get free metro travel cards which allow you to travel into central Lausanne for free. The metro is a two minute walk from the hotel entrance. The rooms are very nicely decorated. The staff really go above and beyond. Especially the man that was working the night we stayed. There are nice bakeries, and restaurants nearby.

    Been visiting this hotel for 30 years, always charmed by the views, and the location is so convenient for Swiss travel, it has always been my primary destination and a personal gateway into Switzerland. EV charging is now a perfect addition, the hotel is and has always been clean and well kept, staff have always been first class, the young man on reception on this occasion, was not the best… more training required…

    Good Ibis Hotel close to the center of Lausanne. Room is clean, bathroom was a real bathroom, not a plastic box like in many other Ibis budget hotels. Beds were comfortable, personel nice and friendly. Wlan was good and breakfast buffet a good mix of tasty things (breakfast buffet available from 6am to 12am). I booked a special offer at booking.com with breakfast.

    The hotel is just in front of Gare de Lausanne., and close to Lausanne subway (1 minute walk). The stuff we’re very friendly and helpful. They gave me coffee capsules ( l’Or) for free because they have a capsule coffee machine in the room. Also there is, in the same building, a Starbucks. They have AC!!
