Alpine Resort and Large Glaciers
Grindelwald lies at more than 1000 metres above sea level, offering top-class ski slopes and an imposing Alpine landscape. It is located in the canton of Bern, in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aletsch is the largest glacier to be found in the Alps.
Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. During the second half of the 19th century, roads and railway lines were developed, allowing a constant influx of visitors. Grindelwald is like a Swiss Fairytale. All the wonderful Swiss Chalets, the incomparable alps, the charming Swiss people. Grindelwald is definitely a tourist town with shops selling all the Swiss trinkets, but that's part of the charm. Unique in its´location, dramatic mountain views everywhere, variety of walks and activities including summer glacier hikes, caves and sport/spa facilities with excellent dining after activities. It looks like heaven...so beautiful, but stay out of the main village for accommodations. Shop at the small local shops on the fringe. Lovely town with a lot of activities.

It is also located 20min by foot from Grindelwald Terminal where we could take the cable car to Jungfrau. The staff was super kind and helpful and the breakfast buffet was delicious. They also have a transportation option to the train station for when you have lugagge and don't want to go up the hill with it. We had two interconnected rooms as a family, and these face the street rather than the Eiger (I knew this when booking). It can get a bit noisy in the evening on the street, but the windows were well insulated. Of four hotels I stayed in and notified I was vegan, this was the only one to reply and they brought in soya yoghurt and milk especially and there was dairy free spread anyway. This made breakfast more balanced for me. The views from our room and the breakfast bar are stunning.
